Beach Inspired Graduation Party
Beach Inspired Graduation Party

My son's beach inspired high school graduation party.

Tiki Hut
Tiki Hut

Hand constructed tiki hut created using a backyard canopy tent, authentic thatch for the roof, open weave burlap for the sides and additional burlap for wrapping the legs of the tent. It took a few hours to put it all together but it was the focal point of the party and it was worth all of the time spent creating it. I really hated to take it down!

Since we had our party indoors the tent added that "outdoor feeling" and everyone loved it! It was the perfect place to display my son's card box, pictures and high school memories.

Keeping with the "beach" theme I created this card box using an old galvanized bucket covered in burlap. I placed it in a small "sandbox" added a tin shovel and a few shells and starfish, very easy to make!

I kept the table decorations simple. The candles added a warm glow to the room and the mason jars filled with some sand and sea glass made perfect weights for the balloons.

The dessert table looked amazing! Pies and cookies were made by my mom, mother-in-law and sister. My mom set up the dessert table...it was very popular and she did an incredible job!

It was all so yummy!!

Snowcone Tiki Bar
Snowcone Tiki Bar

We even had a snowcone tiki bar (no alcohol...just ice and flavoring). I used an ice cream cart that my mom had constructed many years ago for a wedding shower. It worked out perfectly for the snowcone bar and the kids (and grownups) really loved it!

I just attached a sign from the dollar store to add a little beachy flair!

The flavors for the snowcones were written on a slate sign displayed on a vintage easel that my aunt used to use in her nursery class at church. She passed away many years ago but she always loved a party....had to have a little piece of her there with us :)

T-Shirt Blanket
T-Shirt Blanket

I've been saving my son's t-shirts since grade school and was determined to make him a blanket someday (I was inspired by my Aunt Dee's creation 10+ years ago). I'm not really a seamstress but I found a very easy link on Pinterest shared by http://theorganizedwife.wordpress.com/2012/02/25/saturday-project-tee-shirt and the link to the tutorial can be found at http://cinnaberry-suite.blogspot.com/2011/08/t-shirt-quilt-tut.html. He loved it and I was really proud of my accomplishment!

An overall view of the party venue. We used burlap ties as a simple but effective way to dress up the backs of the chairs and raffia/seashell accents around the tables. (They were supposed to be raffia table skirts but were too small so we actually found that cutting them apart and placing them where the table legs were was more effective in the end as people would've gotten the raffia skirts caught in their legs when they sat down....it all worked out for the best!)

Santa

Santa is actually a Halloween decoration...a Dancing Pirate Skeleton (yep, look closely at his feet). I dressed him up in Santa's clothes and added a vintage mask/wall hanging by attaching it with a large rubber band and then covered it with a beard, hair and hat. His skeleton hands were covered with gloves. Inexpensive way to create a life size Santa.
